Live Webinar Overview

Pharmacists, thanks to their extensive training, are regarded as the drug experts. However, for most pharmacists that only applies to human medications. Most pharmacy schools have no mention of veterinary medicine in their traditional curriculum. With sixty-eight percent of households having some pet under their roof, this presents a huge opportunity for pharmacists to “cash in” on the pet market. This webinar will focus on the canine and feline population, and treatment of their most common disease states.

In this activity, medications will be reviewed that are intended for human use but are frequently used in pets. Veterinary specific medications will be introduced to the practicing pharmacist. With no insurance red tape, prior authorizations, no DIR fees, and owners happy to fund the care of their pets, having both veterinary prescribed and OTC medications in the community pharmacy is a win-win for both pharmacists and pet owners.

Learning Objectives

Describe factors that place community pharmacies in an ideal position to meet the medication related needs of pets.

Identify common needs of pets that can be offered as a service through community pharmacies.

Describe medications commonly used in pets including dosages, owner counseling, and potential solutions to challenges with med administration.
